The Diary of a Killer Cat

The Diary of a Killer Cat
by Anne Fine

Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 1994

Genre:  Humor

Honors:  Nottinghamshire Libraries Award, The French translation, Journal d'un chat assassin won the Prix Versele (Belgium) and the Prix Sorcières premières lectures (France), Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award

Review:  Tuffy is just a cat trying to get by in life, and part of his daily activities is to chase little animals and kill them. Unfortunately, this makes Tuffy's owner Ellie, and her parents, very disturbed. When Tuffy brings their neighbor's dead rabbit into the house, it's a little too much for the family to handle and they try to fix the situation before their neighbors notice.

Opinion:  This laugh out loud funny book was enjoyable from beginning to end. It was cataloged with the 'xy' books in my local branch, which are books geared towards tweens. I believe that the somewhat gruesome nature of the book's theme contributed to this classification, otherwise I found that the book was more simplistic in general.

Ideas:  As this book is short and hysterical, it would be perfect for younger tween reluctant readers, or for kids who loves cats.
