The Thieves of Ostia

The Thieves of Ostia; The Roman Mysteries, Book One
by Caroline Lawrence

Roaring Brook Press, 2001

Genre:  Mystery, Historical fiction

Honors:  Classical Association Prize

Reviews:  Set in Ancient Roman times in the port of Ostia, four young children meet while trying to solve the mystery of the beheading of dogs from their street. Flavia, daughter of a sea captain, initiates the search of the dog killer. She convinces her new neighbor Jonathan, son of a new Christian; Nubia, a slave girl Flavia saved; and Lupus, a mute beggar boy; to help her solve the case. Their new friendship is just the beginning of their crime solving escapades.

Opinion:  Lawrence created an intriguing and fast paced mystery, with diverse and well developed characters. The accurate historical background added a layer of fun and fascination that I really enjoyed.

Ideas:  This book would be great for a display with ancient world themes. Additionally, a teacher might find this book useful for use in a curriculum of ancient Rome. Lastly, I would love to put this book on a book list of mystery related items.
