Small Acts of Amazing Courage
Small Acts of Amazing Courage
by Gloria Whelan
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2011
Genre: Historical Fiction
Honors: None yet, still a new book
Review: Rosalind and her parents live in India during 1918, when the British still rule the country. Rosalind's father has gone off to war, and although taboo among many of the other English settlers, Rosalind finds herself interested in attending gatherings hosting the innovative speaker Gandhi. She also loves to roam the Indian market together with her friend Isla, and is suddenly presented with a life altering decision that also speaks to her kind and accepting nature.
Opinion: What an incredible story; from the time period, to the characters, and the overall developments throughout the story. I was moved by the plot and the bravery of the main character in her approach to life as she develops her identity. I look forward to reading more of Whelan's works with relish.
Ideas: Since this book deals with the famous Gandhi and what life was like in India in those days, it would be a perfect book for a geography teacher relaying information on India. Another idea might be a book display of items related to the country of India.
