Into the Land of the Unicorns
Into the Land of the Unicorns: The Unicorn Chronicles Book One
by Bruce Coville
Scholastic, Inc, 1994
Genre: Animal fantasy
Honors: None known
Review: This contemporary fantasy hurls the main character, Cara, into a magical world that protects unicorns from the evil Hunters. Cara was given a special locket and a message from her grandmother, who is also her only caretaker. As she meets new characters and creatures in the novel world, she realizes she cannot escape her fate that is now intertwined with the survival of unicorns. She also has to figure out how to somehow reach the queen of the unicorns and return to her own world and her grandmother.
Opinion: Bruce Coville is a fantastic weaver of fantasy stories. As a unicorn lover myself, I only wished I knew of this series so I could reap the enjoyment of reading a light yet well-written story about unicorns. Additionally, as I was reading the story, it was clear from the prose that Coville is indeed a unicorn lover as well.
Ideas: This would be a perfect book for a display of the vast amount of Bruce Coville works, perhaps if a new Coville book is released. Another idea might be to add this book to a suggested reading list of unicorn books, or fantasy books.
