The Castle of Galomar

The Castle of Galomar; New Brighton Archeological Society, Book One
by Mark Andrew Smith
Illustrated by Matthew Weldon

Image Comics, Inc, 2009

Genre:  Graphic Novel, Adventure, Fantasy

Honors:  Harvey Award nominee

Reviews:  The world's greatest explorers were also two couples who were the greatest of friends. When they disappeared on an expedition, their four children were transferred to the care of their elderly godparents. Together they formed The New Brighton Archeological Society, determined to continue the work of their respective parents. On their first adventure, they meet up with goblins, fairies, vampires, the evil Galomar, and try to regain the important magical map.

Opinion:  The adventure aspect of the story line was well depicted and I finished this book hoping to read what happens next in the series. However, it seemed to me that the author assumed his audience knew the same amount of background information as he did. Therefore, it took me the whole book to figure out the relationship between the four kids and their parents, which I found very frustrating.

Ideas:  This book would be great for tweens who love Indiana Jones, and are looking for more archeological based adventures with a smattering of fantasy.
