The Short and Bloody History of Pirates
The Short and Bloody History of Pirates
by John Farman
Lerner Publications Company, 2000
Genre: Non-fiction, Humor
Honors: none known
Review: Separated into ten chapters, this book is a humorous and detailed look at the lives of pirates. Every gory and fascinating fact is written in all it's stark details. John Farman describes the differences between varied types of pirates, tells of the food they ate on their voyages, details the weapons they used and the clothes they wore, and discusses what pirates would do during their spare time. Furthermore, there are a couple of chapters that present some famous female and male pirates and the reasons for their infamous status.
Opinion: Initially I thought this was a fiction book because of my local library's placement in the softcover fiction section. However, I quickly realized that this was a work of non-fiction and came to appreciate the method in which the author utilized humor and comedic cartoons to depict a factual presentation on pirates.
Ideas: This book would work great for a world history or social studies unit on pirates. The humor could assist students in remembering some facts better. Another idea would be that this book could be used to interest children in reading non-fiction.
